Cold Water Immersion

Cold Plunge

A few minutes of cold, and a different kind of calm

THE TREATMENT

The cold is the point

Cold plunge is a brief immersion in cold water, usually two to five minutes, that constricts blood vessels, helps reduce muscle soreness and inflammation, and triggers an endorphin release that leaves most people feeling calm, clear, and alert for hours.

The first thirty seconds are the hardest part. Your breath catches, your body wants out, and then something shifts. You settle, you breathe, and you stay. That’s the whole practice, and it’s why cold plunge does as much for your mind as it does for your body.

Physically, the cold constricts blood vessels and helps manage inflammation and muscle soreness. Mentally, deliberately choosing discomfort and staying calm inside it is a skill, and it carries over. People come for the recovery and keep coming for what it does to their stress response.

  1. BreatheBefore you get in, you slow your breathing. This is what makes the first thirty seconds manageable, and our team walks you through it.
  2. ImmerseYou step into the cold water for two to five minutes. Your instinct will be to gasp. You breathe through it instead, and that's the whole practice.
  3. RechargeYou step out, warm up, and the endorphin rush arrives. Most people feel clear-headed and calm for hours afterward.

Think you can't do it?

Almost everyone thinks that. Book a session and find out, or join bluRITUAL for unlimited plunge, sauna, and cryotherapy.

Why it works

What cold plunge does for your body and mind

You can do this

Two to five minutes, and the first thirty seconds are the hardest part.

Almost everyone thinks they can't. Almost everyone can. Our team coaches you through the breathing, and you build tolerance faster than you'd expect.

Trains your stress response

Staying calm inside deliberate discomfort is a skill, and it transfers.

This is the benefit people don't anticipate. You practice controlling your reaction to something hard, and you find you handle other hard things better too.

Lifts mood and mental clarity

Cold triggers an endorphin release most people feel as a sharp lift in mood and focus.

That clarity tends to last for hours. It's why people schedule a plunge before a demanding afternoon rather than after.

Eases soreness and supports recovery

Cold immersion constricts blood vessels and helps reduce muscle soreness and inflammation.

It's a long-standing recovery practice among athletes, and it's why people with hard training schedules build it into their week.

Supports circulation

The constrict-then-rewarm cycle stimulates blood flow.

Cold exposure is a form of hormetic stress, a controlled challenge your body adapts to, which is the same principle behind exercise and heat.

Pairs with sauna

Cold plunge does its best work as half of a contrast practice.

Alternate it with Traditional Sauna or Cryotherapy for the full hot-and-cold cycle. Both are included in bluRITUAL.

“Sauna, plunge, repeat. My recovery is better than it's been in ten years and I sleep straight through the night.”

Karen, 52  •  Paradise Valley

“The mental clarity afterward is unlike anything else. I go before big meetings now.”

Dana, 49  •  Biltmore

Cold plunge questions, answered

What is cold plunge therapy?

Cold plunge is a brief immersion in cold water, usually two to five minutes. The cold constricts blood vessels, helps reduce muscle soreness and inflammation, and triggers an endorphin release that leaves most people feeling calm, clear, and alert for hours afterward.

How cold is it, and how long do I have to stay in?

Most people stay in for two to five minutes. You don't have to hit a number on your first try. Start with what you can manage, focus on your breathing, and build from there. Tolerance comes faster than most people expect.

Is it going to be awful?

The first thirty seconds are genuinely hard, and then it gets easier. Your instinct is to gasp and get out. Slowing your breathing is what changes the experience, and our team coaches you through it. Almost everyone who thinks they can't do it, can.

What's the difference between cold plunge and cryotherapy?

Cold plunge immerses you in cold water for two to five minutes, so the cold penetrates deeply and the mental challenge is a real part of it. Cryotherapy uses dry, extremely cold air for two to three minutes, which feels more tolerable and is faster. Both support recovery. Many people use both, and both are included in bluRITUAL.

Is cold plunge safe?

Cold immersion is well-tolerated by most healthy adults, and our team is with you throughout. It isn't appropriate for everyone, including people with certain heart, circulatory, or blood pressure conditions, or those who are pregnant. Check with your doctor if you have a medical condition.

How often should I cold plunge?

The benefits are cumulative, so consistency matters more than duration. Many people plunge three to four times a week, often paired with sauna. Even a short, regular practice beats an occasional long one.

Should I plunge before or after a workout?

Both work, and it depends on your goal. After a workout, cold supports recovery and eases soreness. Some people prefer to plunge on rest days or separately from training. Our team can help you time it around your routine.

Does cold plunge help you lose weight?

No. Cold exposure is associated with activating brown fat, which the body uses to generate heat, but cold plunge is not a weight loss treatment. It supports recovery, stress resilience, and metabolic health as part of a broader routine.

"Cold plunge supports recovery, helps manage inflammation, and sharpens mental clarity. What makes it valuable is the practice itself, learning to stay calm inside discomfort builds a resilience that carries well beyond the water."
